What happened next shocked even Marissa herself.
It all began when she discovered slime at 13, inspired by a video of people playing with the gooey substance. A chance shopping trip with her mum led to the purchase of glitter glue, and Marisa’s first slime experiment was born. She started small, selling her creations to school friends, but her knack for creativity quickly set her apart.
The ASMR Breakthrough
Marisa’s business exploded when she started posting ASMR videos of herself playing with slime on TikTok. ASMR — or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response — videos trigger a euphoric tingling sensation in viewers through sounds and visuals, and Marisa’s slime videos were a viral hit.
“Making these ASMR videos is basically like marketing,” she told Channel 4. “You’re showing the product before people buy it, so they know exactly what they’re getting.”
One of her most popular videos has racked up an astonishing 7 million views, driving massive demand for her colorful, glittery creations.
A Global Slime Empire
Since launching her business, Marisa has sold over 100,000 slimes, shipping them across the globe. She now produces 10 gallons of slime a day, crafting over 300 unique types with a variety of colours, scents, and glitters. Each slime is priced between £10 and £13, and restocks often sell out within minutes.
Her success doesn’t stop at slime. Marisa has expanded her brand, selling hoodies, socks, and phone cases under her company name, Parakeet Slimes.
A Family Effort
While her parents were once skeptical, they’ve since become her biggest supporters, pitching in to help with the growing business. The only holdout? Her brother, who reportedly “hates slime.”
Marisa works tirelessly, running her business seven days a week. Despite the long hours, she feels immense gratitude for the opportunities her business has created.
And not only that, now she’s employing the whole family, who are all better off thanks to her slime empire.
Looking ahead, she dreams of opening a physical slime warehouse where fans can buy her creations in person. “I love that I’m earning money from something that brings people joy,” she says.
From a doubted idea to a multimillion-dollar empire, Marisa’s story proves that passion and persistence can turn even the slimiest dreams into reality.
